Fenton, Mo.- The Missouri Baptist women's soccer team were looking to get a home victory in the first round of the American Midwest Conference Tournament. The team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and was able to hold off Harris-Stowe with a final 5-2.
The Spartans were wanting to come out of the gates and grab an early lead. After many different scoring chances the team was able to score into the back of the net in the 20th minute.
Ashley Burton took a pass from
Sarah O'Donnell and was able to dribble her way through the defense to beat Hornets goalie AmyLynne Brickey to make it 1-0. Just before the half ended
Sarah O'Donnell added a goal of her own to make it 2-0.
The second half was busy with everything from fouls to plenty of goals. MBU's
Ashley Burton added her second goal of the game in the 46th minute on a pass from
Amber Hennrich to make it 3-0. The Hornets continued to fight back when Zoey Flaxbeard made the score 3-1 on a shot that beat Spartan goalie Samantha Schulze.
Harris-Stowe continued its offensive pressure even being down a player and it paid off as Zoey Flaxbeard scored her second goal of the day on a free kick to make it 3-2 in the 65th minute. The Spartans were able to extend the lead to 4-2 on a goal by
Melissa Turney and made it 5-2 final on a penalty kick goal by
Sarah O'Donnell.
The Spartans outshot the Hornets 27-9 in the game. MBU's goalie Samantha Schulze made three saves.
The team moves onto the semifinals and will head on the road to Park University on Monday November 7th at 1:00.
