Fayette, Mo. - On Saturday night the Spartans traveled to play Central Methodist University hoping to get its first victory on the early season, but fell just short of that losing 5-3 on a hot night in Fayette.
The Spartan women started off strong with a goal at the 11:00 minute mark by Sarah O'Donnell (assisted by Lauren Clinton) making it 1-0. Central Methodist answered by tying the game up at 1-1 at the end of the 25th minute on a goal by Kayla Lesser. Less than two minutes later Kayla Lesser scored on MBU's keeper, Samantha Schulze, making it 2-1.Central Methodist notched two more goals before the halftime horn sounded to take a 4-1 lead.
The Spartans came out strong after the half, getting back into the game with a goal by
Courtney Young in the 47th minute (assisted by
Ashley Burton) to make it 4-2. Unfortunately for MBU, the comeback was short-lived. In the 53rd minute, Central Methodist scored making it 5-2 on a goal by Lauren Robb. MBU added another from
Sarah O'Donnell in the 70th minute to make it 5-3, but that was as close as the Spartans would make it.
MBU was outshot 22-9 in the game and nine of Central Methodist's shots were on goal. The game was called 1:20 minutes short due to lightning.
MBU moves to 0-4 on the year but will look to put a win on the board for the home crowd on September 10th at 4:00 p.m. as it hosts Union University.
