ST. LOUIS, Mo.- The Missouri Baptist men's soccer team headed on the road for another important contest against the William Woods Owls. Even though the Owls controlled the game offensively, the Spartan defense stayed strong and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
In the first half, both teams were spreading the ball around the field. Trying to find open shots, while also controlling ball possession. The Spartans got a break early in the 35th minute, when a turnover by the Spartan defense found the foot of Joao Paulo Dutra Parra. The forward had a clear shot at the goal, but kicked the ball high over the net.
The Spartans then had a great shot from defender Oscar Rojas, that was beyond mid-field, however, his shot went right at William Woods goalie Igor Dos Santos. The Owls continued to control most of the first 45:00 minutes, but the Spartans continued to hold strong defensively.
At the 10:00 minute mark, Joe Whitacre had three straight corner kicks for MBU, though the Owl defense kept the ball out of danger and the game stayed scoreless until the half. WWU outshot the Spartans 12-3 in the first half, with Spartan goalie Ethan Brunk making four saves.
Heading into the second half, it was the Owls continuing to control the ball and again outshot the Spartans 13-4. The MBU defense stood strong though, keeping the game tied at 0-0. Neither team couldn't find the back of the net, so after 90:00 minutes of play, the match-up headed into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Owls had seven shots and were able to hold the Spartans to just one. Again, the Spartans were able to keep William Woods out of the goal and the teams prepared for the final overtime.
In double overtime, it was the same story with the Owls pushing the pace on offense, but the Spartans hung tight defensively and in goal. After 110:00 minutes of play, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
Gavin Cuddy, Danny Traylor and Whitacre each had two shots a game. The Owls were led by Parra with eight shots. MBU was outshot 37-10 in the game, with Spartan goalie making nine saves.
The Spartans move their record to 3-11-1 and will be back in action at home on October 23rd against Harris-Stowe Sate. Kick off will start at 3:00 p.m.
