Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - It was an impressive day at the plate and on the mound for the Spartan softball team. MBU defeated Principia College in game one 16-0 in five innings, and in game two 5-0.
In game one, the Spartans scored 16 runs on 17 hits. The scoring started in the bottom of the first, as Megan Wildhaber led off the inning with a single. After stealing second base, Wildhaber advanced home on a Katie Payne single to center, giving Missouri Baptist a 1-0 lead.
That was all starter Jena Trombley needed, as the freshman picked up yet another victory on the year. Trombley was solid on the mound allowing just four hits and striking out three in the outing. The scoring frenzy continued into the second inning, as the Spartans pushed across eight runs on eight hits.
Miranda Romero was impressive in the inning, having two hits scoring twice and adding three RBI. In the third, the offense continued its firepower, scoring seven more runs on seven hits taking a 16-0 lead. Trombley and the Spartans went on to cruise for the win.
The four through eight hitters of Danielle Bayer, Donyelle DeMarse, Romero and Corey Pitchford chipped in a combined total of 12 RBI. Wildhaber finished an impressive day at the leadoff position going 3-4 with three runs scored. Heathre DePratt, Payne and Jordyn Nobbs each added the other RBI on the day.
In game two, the Spartans started hot at the plate scoring three runs on four hits in the first. Lindsay Benck got things started with a one out single to center. Benck, stole second and moved to third on a Katie Payne single to right, putting runners on the corners. Danielle Bayer came to the dish and ripped a triple to right, scoring two runs giving MBU the lead. Bayer was able to extend the lead to 3-0, scoring on a wild pitch.
Starter Kellsie Domnitz continued the great pitching day, allowing just six hits and striking out five. The Spartans added one more run in the third and another run in the fourth, for the five run win.
Domnitz and Trombley were helped out by the Spartan offense all afternoon. Benck, Payne and Bayer continued their day of swinging the bats well as the trio combined to go 8-12 with three RBI and five runs scored in game two.
The team extends their record to 29-15 and will be back in action on Saturday against Benedictine University in the final home game on the season. First pitch will be thrown at 12:00 p.m.
