ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist women's wrestling started the year off with a win and a loss on Friday in the Midland University Triangular. The team dropped its dual against Jamestown University 32-12 and defeated Midland 26-14 in its first action of 2013.

The Spartans had troubles with Jamestown and wrestled down three after forfeits in the 116 and 129lb weight classes. The dual began with an open match at 101 pounds allowing Jamestown to collect the first points of the dual at 109. Amy Fearniside defeated MBU's Caitlyn Chase 0-6, 7-1, 7-1.

After the Spartan forfeit at 116, MBU newcommer Aleah LaFrancis took a win by forfeit to make it a three-point dual. A loss by Cheyenne Youngblood by fall at 130lbs followed by the pin of Jamestown's Joanna Navarro by Sarah Bollinger at 136lbs again made it a three-point contest. This was, however, as close as it got. Jamestown rattled off four consecutive victories to close out the dual.

Against Midland, MBU was down early and rebounded with six straight wins. The Spartans were down 0-8 after two matches with a forfeit at 101 and a Caitlyn Chase loss by decision in the 109lb class. After an open 116lb weight class, Missouri Baptist took control.

MBU's LaFrancis started things off with a win by decision over Summer Werner at 130 lbs to put the Spartans on the board. Youngblood followed the win with a pin of Midland's Frankie Valverde and Missouri Baptist never looked back. Bollinger, Sarah Holdman, newcommer Brenda Gonzalez and Darcie Manning-O'Brien collected wins to finish the host school off.

The Spartans will compete on Saturday at the Waldorf Open and will attempt to build off the success it found on Friday.
