ST. LOUIS- Todd D'Aquila's overtime goal set the Missouri Baptist men's soccer team into celebration mode, as they defeated Freed-Hardeman, 2-1. The Spartans improve to 7-4-3 overall and 3-3-2 in AMC play. It was the first victory for Jake Alvernia's squad in six matches.
Corbin Rodriguez earned the win in net for MBU. He stopped four shots, two in each half. Missouri Baptist outshot Freed-Hardeman 14-10 during the 97 minutes of play.
Todd D'Aquila posted his first collegiate goal, while Brendan Dwyer scored his first goal of the 2013 season. Joe Wonsewith picked up two assists, while Tyler Kuehner and Ryan Krupp pitched in one assist each.
In the 26th minute, Joe Wonsewith took a corner kick and sailed it towards the net. The ball was headed towards the other side of the net by Tyler Kuehner, and Brendan Dwyer pierced the back of the net with a sharp header of his own.
In the second half, Joe Wonsewith had a chance to win the game in the 87th minute, but his blast hit the crossbar.
The Spartans were just 58 second away from a victory when Matias Bravo scored the equalizer and sent the game into overtime.
Wonsewith would get redemption in the first overtime when he drilled a free kick into the box. Ryan Krupp played the ball to Todd D'Aquila, who guided the game winning goal into the net, setting off a bench clearing celebration.
Missouri Baptist will look to continue its winning ways on Thursday, when they travel to play Avila in a non-conference matchup.
