ST. LOUIS – One goal was enough to win the game, as the Missouri Baptist men's soccer team defeated William Woods, 1-0 on senior night. The win qualifies the Spartans for the AMC tournament as they improve to 9-5-3 overall and 4-4-2 in AMC play.
Forward Greg Kranz, midfielder Oscar Rojas, midfielder Kyle Gault, defenseman Dylan Penrod, midfielder Kyle Otec, midfielder Brandon Misuraca, defenseman Chris McJunkins and goalkeeper Tim Koppell were the eight seniors honored before the game.
Head coach Jake Alvernia and his team needed just one point to qualify for the AMC tournament, but the Spartans were looking for the win from the opening kickoff. "We knew we needed just one point to qualify and we were fortunate to come away with three points," said coach Alvernia.
William Woods outshot MBU 7-6 and 5-2 shots on goal. Corbin Rodriguez had five saves in the game and his third shutout of the season. William Woods put the pressure on MBU in the first half, firing four shots on goal, but Rodriguez kept the Owls off the scoreboard.
The two teams would head into halftime tied 0-0.
In the second half the Spartans had just one shot on goal, but it was a big one. The WWU keeper came out of the box and tried to play a loose ball, but Providence Tucker flicked it past the keeper and put the Spartans on the board with just six minutes left in the contest. The goal was Tucker's first of the season, and his first game winning goal of the year.
Missouri Baptist will find out next week who they will take on in the first round of the AMC tournament.
