ST.LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist baseball team stretched their conference undefeated streak to 5-0 Saturday. The offense led the attack in the first game, and the pitching shined in the second as the Spartans won both of the doubleheader, 7-3 and 4-0.
Missouri Baptist (11-5, 5-0) looked strong in game one. The Spartan offense picked up where they left off on Friday and scored two runs in the first and one run in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Pirates answered back in the third with two runs and cut the lead to 3-2. MBU took control of the game two innings later when two runs crossed the plate in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Pirates scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Missouri Baptist prevailed with a 7-3 victory.
Senior Ryan Gunhouse led the offensive attack for the Spartans in game one. Gunhouse went 3-4 with four RBI. The winning pitcher for the first game was Julien Soucy. The senior pitched six solid innings. Soucy allowed only one earned run on five hits and improved to 2-0 on the season.
The story of the second game was the MBU pitching. The Spartans shutout Park with the help from three different pitchers (Mike Avila, Dan Harper, and Matt Marsh). The Spartans scored one run in the second, three in the fifth, and defeated Park University 4-0.
Senior Michael Avila recorded seven shutout innings, and only allowed two hits on the day as he earned his first win of the season. Dan Harper pitched a three up, three down eighth inning, and Matt Marsh pitched a one hit ninth to secure the win for the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist improved to 11-5 overall, and 5-0 in the AMC with the two wins on Saturday. The team will play Bethel University at home on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
