ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist women's tennis dropped a 9-0 decision to University of Missouri-St. Louis on Wednesday before roaring back for a 5-4 victory over Stephens College on Saturday at home.
Missouri Baptist (3-4) is just one shy of the .500 mark with its win on Saturday after being shut-out by the Tritons on the road. On Wednesday, UMSL took MBU to task. In singles action, the Spartans put just four points on the board against an experienced and talented NCAA DII squad.
After the disappointing result, the team came back against Stephens and played tough tennis from start to finish. Missouri Baptist took two of three doubles matches and continued its success in singles.
MBU's Elise Beckenmeier and
Hannah Wadlow each lost at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, which put the Stars up by one.
Nicole Zevlever made it interesting at No. 3, however. The junior won 6-1 in the first set and dropped the second 4-6 setting up a third and final set for the win. Her opponent, Stephens' Grace Pitman, took control and won 6-0 to take the match and give her team a slight 4-2 lead.
The Spartans, down by two with three matches left, stood tall and completed the win with three consecutive wins. A win by default at No. 6 brought the match to within one and
Haley Grueber posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 to tie the match at four all.
Shelby Mund represented the winning court and the freshman from Bonne Terre, Mo. won in convincing fashion. Mund defeated Stephens' Dani Kelley 6-0, 6-1 to secure the win for the Spartans.
Winds were strong on the day, which proved tricky at every single court, but the gritty victory put the Spartans just one game under the even mark in 2013. The team will have a chance to get that win on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. when it travels to Webster University to take on the Gorlocks.
