ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist men's soccer team fell in American Midwest Conference action on Saturday as the Columbia Cougars collected their sixth win of the year over the Spartans, 2-0.
Missouri Baptist (1-10-2, 1-5 AMC) managed just one shot in the first half as the Cougars took control from the outset. The shot by Jamie Skillen was saved by the Cougars goal keeper, Daniel Ainsworth. MBU was outshot 7-1 in the first half, as Columbia's Nick Horne scored the first goal of the game.
MBU looked to even the score in the final 45 minutes, and Ryan Krupp nearly pulled it off. The Spartan defender clanged a shot off the crossbar in the 58 the minute, which would have proven the equalizer. Just minutes later, however, Edin Campara hit the back of the Spartan net off the rebound to notch the second point for Columbia.
The Spartans continued to work to make up the difference until the end. Jose Villatoro took a shot with less than a minute left, but came up just short as the ball bounced off the crossbar, the second near miss of the game for MBU.
John Schnurbush was in goal for the Spartans from the start and made the save of the day in the second half off a penalty kick. Scnurbusch recorded six saves in the match on eight shots.
Missouri Baptist will return home to face AMC opponent Lindenwood University - Belleville on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. The game will take place at CBC field beginning at 2:00 pm.
