ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] The Missouri Baptist men's soccer team put together a flurry of offense in the second-half of Wednesday's game against Benedictine University-Springfield and grabbed a hard-fought, 3-0 shutout to take its second win of the season.
Missouri Baptist (2-13-2, 2-7) fought a back and forth battle, but struggled in the first-half against the Bulldogs. Benedictine-Springfield had five shots in the first half, but the Spartan defenders kept them away from the net to make it a 0-0 tie heading into the half.
After the break, the rest seemed to re-invigorate the Spartan offense. With time clicking down just under 18 minutes, Chad Otec found the back of the net to notch the first tally of the game off a set piece for the Spartans. Gerardo Espinoza took the corner kick for the third time in the half and sent a well-placed ball right in front of the net as Otec found it and headed it home to give the Spartans the late lead. Just 31 seconds later, it was Espinoza who scored with 17 minutes remaining in the second half.
Connar Armstrong added one more insurance goal with 10 minutes left in regulation on a left-footed shot that hooked just inside of the left post to make it a three-goal lead for the home team. The goal was Armstrong's first career goal.
John Schnurbusch was in net for the entirety and held the Bulldogs scoreless with one save. It was Schnurbush's second shutout of the season for the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist will close out regular season play at home on Saturday, October 25, 2014. MBU will honor their seniors as they face AMC opponent Park University at 4:00 pm.
