ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Spartan newcomer Dave Mullins made a big impression in his first start of the young 2014 season. The lefty threw six and two-thirds of no-hit ball against Belhaven University and led his team to a 5-2 win on the road.
Missouri Baptist (4-3) looked very good yet again as it claimed its fourth win in a row. The Spartans broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth. Dan Harper led-off the inning with a double and scored later on a ground out by Erik Garcia to make it a 1-0 game.
The Spartans made it 2-0 in the sixth. Orlando Olivera and Dan Harper began the inning with back-to-back singles, putting two aboard with no outs. Olivera advanced to third just one batter later and scored on a throwing error as Harper attempted to steal second.
After Missouri Baptist made it a 3-0 game, the Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Akins reached first on an error and later scored on an RBI double by Brayden Dykes to cut the lead to 3-1.
Though Belhaven added one more in the bottom of the eighth, the Spartans shut the door in the top of the ninth with two runs.
Clinton Graham relieved Mullins in the eighth, but ran into trouble early and recorded just one out. Spartan closer Michael Murano came on with one out and surrendered just one walk and no hits in a five-out save.
"Dave Mullins was outstanding," said Missouri Baptist Head Coach Eddie Uschold. "Murano pitched through some adversity and slammed the door, especially in the eighth with the tying run on third base. It was a very good weekend in Mississippi."
Missouri Baptist combined for 12 hits on the day as Jeff Smith, Josh Fuentes, Harper and Olivera all recorded multi-hit days.
The Spartans will now return home for scheduled home games against Indiana Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday. First pitch for both is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Spartan Fields.
