SPARTANS SURVIVE SCARE FROM HORNETS

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREMissouri Baptist let a five-run lead slip through its fingers on Tuesday, but rallied for a run in the eighth to defeat Harris Stowe 7-6

Missouri Baptist (28-5, 13-2 AMC) trailed by one run before scoring two in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead on Tuesday. The Spartans posted one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead, but the Hornets did not go away. Harris Stowe posted one in the seventh and four in the eighth to tie the game at six. MBU, however, rallied for a run in the bottom of the eighth to grab the conference victory.

Curtis Sawchuk got the start on Tuesday and after a rough first inning, settled-in. The Spartan lefty allowed one run in the first, but ended the inning with the bases loaded after Patrick Griffard grounded out to end the inning.

Sawchuk tossed five innings and allowed just one run on one hit before getting pulled in the sixth inning.

After Carl Jameson allowed one run on two hits in two innings, Chris Kenney got into trouble in the eighth. A victim of circumstance, Kenny struck-out what figured to be the final out of the inning after allowing just one hit, but a dropped third strike and an errant throw down to first by Spartan catcher Erik Garcia continued the inning for the Hornets.

Four runs crossed the plate for Harris Stowe in the eighth inning, which tied the game heading into the bottom half. With two outs in the inning, Trevin Craig came to the plate for MBU and delivered a triple to left center field to continue the inning for Missouri Baptist.

With Craig on third, Vinnie Fresquez pinch hit for Ryan Clarke and hit a chopper to short, but bad throw by Jordan Weaks allowed him to reach first and Craig to score. This run proved to be the game winner as Michael Murano picked-up his second win of the season.

During the game, the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll was released and Missouri Baptist remained in the No. 4 spot in the poll. It was the third consecutive week for MBU at No. 4 overall.
