Missouri Baptist University clinched its 5th straight regular season championship with a double-header sweep of the Freed-Hardeman Lions on Friday night in Henderson, Tenn.
Spartans had the lead on the Lions from the get-go as the first Spartan to cross the plate was shortstop Josh Fuentes who scored in the top of the first inning on a double off the bat of Dan Harper.
Â
The Lions did not waver, though, as lead-off hitter Kyle Dearing self-manufactured a run on two stolen bases, ultimately scoring on a wild throw by Spartan catcher Eric Garcia.
Â
That would be the only run allowed by the Spartans for the rest of the game as they plated two more runs in the third and seventh inning to secure the 3-1 win.
Â
Fuentes and Harper were the only two Spartans with more than one hit or an RBI (two for Harper, one for Fuentes). Zwyicki tossed a complete game, only allowing one run on six hits, four strikeouts, and only one walk.
Â
Brandon Zwyicki is now 11-0 on the year.
Â
In game 2, Orlando Olivera took the spotlight, going 3-5 with 3 RBI. His first at bat was a 2 run home run over left field on the first pitch he saw.
Â
Alongside Olivera, Spartan right fielder Eli Roundtree and pinch-hitter Enrique Pagan each drove in a run as the Spartans topped the Lions 5-3 to clinch the regular season conference championship title.
Â
David Mullins went out and punched in a solid performance, allowing only one earned run (two unearned) on six hits and five strikeouts.
Â
After Mullins' eight innings of work, closer Michael Murano earned a save after giving up a run on two hits.
Â
The Spartans will wrap up the three game conference series Saturday at 12:00 p.m., then will head home and have the week to prepare for the American Midwest Conference Tournament next weekend at Lamphier Park in Springfield, Illinois.
