ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE GAME 1] [BOX SCORE GAME 2] The Missouri Baptist Spartans continued their impressive 2014 campaign on Saturday, while taking both ends of a doubleheader against conference rival Benedictine-Springfield.
Missouri Baptist (30-5, 15-2 AMC) pitchers only walked two batters on the day, while striking out 14, and the offense took care of the rest.
Dave Mullins, who would improve to 4-0, started the first game (7 innings) for the Spartans and threw a complete game shutout while only allowing 3 hits and striking out 6.
The Spartans offense, which hadn't been held to 1 run or less in almost a month, would struggle early, but come through late with 4 runs in the 6th inning. Which sealed the victory for MBU 5-0.
Fuentes, Pagan, and Stropp all picked RBI's for the Spartans.
In the second game, the Spartans overcame an early 1-0 deficit to back starter Brandon Zywicki—who remains undefeated on the year at 9-0—and picked up the win 8-3. Zywicki threw 75 of his 109 pitches for strikes and struck out 5 batters in his 7 innings.
Carl Jameson finished off the game with two perfect innings that included 3 strikeouts.
First baseman Dan Harper, shortstop Orlando Olivera, and catcher Erik Garcia all homered and picked up 2 RBI's for the Spartans, who are still averaging over 8 runs a game this year.
All nine of the Spartans starting position players reached base in the contest.
The Spartans, who have the 2nd highest winning percentage in the nation (.857), extended their winning streak to 6 games, while snapping the Bulldogs win streak at 6.
