ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] The Spartans held strong against the No. 8 team Baker University, and came out with a tie.
Through the first half Baker took the offensive end and were taking it to the goal; however with John Schnurbusch in the net Baker couldn't get anything through. Schnurbush coming out of the first half with four saves off of Bakers four shots on goal.
The second half of the game Missouri Baptist took the offensive right out of the gates. Just four minutes into the second half Jamie Skillen found the net for the Spartans putting them up 1-0. Through the rest of the second half the Spartans and the Wildcats went back and forth. With only nineteen seconds left in the game Baker snuck in a goal to tie the game.
Through the first and second over times the Spartans held the score as the teams fought for the winning goal. As the buzzer sounded neither team was able to score resulting in a draw.
Leading the offense for the Spartans was Jamie Skillen who had three shot with two on goal and one goal. Ryan Krupp was right behind having two shot with one on goal. Goalie, John Schnurbusch, came up with a total of thirteen saves for the Spartans.
"The boys fought hard against a tough team" says Head Coach Alvernia, "In the end we needed the game to end nineteen seconds early. Overall, I am really proud of the boy's effort today. They stayed mentally tough and worked hard for the point, fantastic start to the season."
With a strong start to the season MBU looks to build on what they have learned today. The team will play in the MidAmerica Nazarene Tournament again tomorrow against the host team No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene at 1 pm.
