Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Goals from Donna Jolliff and Morgan Mell helped the Spartans snap a three-game losing streak and defeat Harris-Stowe State University 2-1 Tuesday afternoon.
After Harris-Stowe (3-7-1) fired two early shots, the Spartans (3-8-1) went on the attack and found the back of the net. Senior Donna Jolliff took Missouri Baptist's first shot of the game and snuck it past the Hornets' goalkeeper in the 10th minute.
The Spartans would carry that 1-0 lead into the halftime break. Missouri Baptist outshot Harris-Stowe 8-4 in the first 45 minutes, with seven shots on goal. Danielle Wilde nearly extended the Spartans lead, but Harris-Stowe goalie Bruna Prates de Olivera stopped her penalty kick in the 14th minute.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Morgan Mell scored her second goal of the season to put Missouri Baptist ahead 2-0. Danielle Wilde was credited with the assist.
The second half featured an abundance of offensive opportunities. 11 shots on goal were recorded and 17 shots overall, but only one other found the net.
Megan Wilson scored for the Hornets in the 89th minute to prevent a Spartan shutout. Outside of that goal, Missouri Baptist goalie Alex Lair stopped everything in her way and racked up seven total saves.
Danielle Wilde led the Spartans in shots with 6.
The Spartans continue their busy week on Thursday when they take on Central Baptist College at 2:00 p.m.
