Box Score The loss ended the Spartans (7-10-2) season. Lyon forward Maria Alonzo broke the scoreless tie in the 36th minute off a corner kick. She tracked down a loose ball from the corner and buried it into the net from about 20 yards out.
The Spartans were nearly the first to strike just minutes earlier. Donna Jolliff's shot in the 30th minute nearly went in, but clanked off the post. Megan Allen also had a shot seconds later that went wide.
In total, Lyon outshot Missouri Baptist 13-6 in the first half and 21-10 overall. That made for a busy afternoon for Spartan goalkeeper Alex Lair. The sophomore made all five of her saves in the first half.
The Scots preserved their 1-0 lead throughout the second half. Alyssa Matz had a scoring chance inside the box in the 66th minute, but couldn't capitalize. Lyon goalkeeper Ali Ertl made four saves on the day and pitched her second consecutive shutout against the Spartans.
Lyon then doubled its lead in the 85th minute. Monica Ayala sent a pass forward to the team's leading goal-scorer Anna Waldman. Waldman tracked down the ball ahead of the pack and sent it past Lair to put the Scots ahead 2-0.
The goal proved to be added insurance. Taylor Giese fired a late shot on goal for the Spartans, but Alonzo's first-half goal turned out to be all Lyon would need.
Giese led Missouri Baptist with three shots (two on goal). The Spartans ended the season with a 7-10-2 record overall and a 7-3-2 mark in conference play.
