SPARTANS FINISH GRAY WOLVES IN FOUR-GAME SWEEP

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE G1] [BOX SCORE G2Missouri Baptist baseball put together two more solid games on Thursday and extended its win streak to seven games in the process in 6-0 and 4-3 wins.

Missouri Baptist (17-1, 3-0 AMC) continued to find success in the 2015 season as Pre-Season All-American Brandon Zywicki took the hill in game one. The senior was outstanding and picked-up his second win of the year in a complete-game effort.

Zywicki, the native of Rochester, Minn., was on his game through the early going and had a no-hitter going through four and one-third innings. The lone hit he gave up came in the fifth as catcher Garrett Jex singled to left center. This, however, was the extent of the offense that the Gray Wolves put together in the first game.

The Spartans, on the other hand, slowly and steadily, put together another solid offensive effort. Orlando Olivera tied Eli Roundtree with his team-leading sixth home run in the bottom of the third to put MBU up 3-0.

Tim Cusick also had a big game. The 6'6" designated hitter went 2-3 with a walk and a stolen base.

Game two was much more of a battle as the Lourdes' bats came alive in the third and fourth innings. Kyle Sherman drove-in the games' first run with an RBI single through the hole at short to make it 1-0.

MBU answered with a run of its own in the bottom-half. Aaron Collazo and Jeff Smith provided back-to-back doubles to put the Spartans on the board and tie the game at one.

The Gray Wolves chased the Spartan starter Alex Hill from the game in the fourth as they regained the lead with two runs. Jex singled and drove-in the go-ahead run, before Tyler Trame hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Missouri Baptist got one back in the bottom-half of the inning and began the comeback in the bottom of the fifth.

MBU trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth, but was able to tie the game on one swing of the bat. Jeff Smith provided the heroics and hit a first pitch fastball over the center field wall to tie the game at three.

Then, with two out, the Spartans threatened again. Olivera walked and Eli Roundtree singled to put two aboard, but a fielding error in right field allowed the runners to grab second and third. Tim Cusick had an opportunity to give the home team its first lead of the game, but Brandon Holt did his job in relief of Nate Snow. Holt got Cusick to chase a fastball off the plate to end the both the inning and the MBU threat.

Michael Murano entered to pitch in the seventh for the Spartans and pitched himself out of a jam. The closer of a year ago allowed a leadoff hit as a sacrifice bunt and a groundout got the runner to third. With first and third occupied and two outs, the righty struck-out Kyle Sherman to retire the Gray Wolves.

Aaron Collazo led-off the bottom of the seventh and took a pitch to the left shoulder, and put the lead runner aboard. Then, after a wild throw to third, Collazo ended-up at third with no outs and Jeff Smith heading to the plate. Smith then finished the game with a sacrifice fly to center field to end the ball game.

Missouri Baptist will now head to Hannibal-LaGrange on Friday and Saturday to take-on the Trojans in the team's second American Midwest Conference series of the season.
