Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE G1] [BOX SCORE G2] Missouri Baptist utilized a three-run fifth inning in game one and back-to-back home runs by Eli Roundtree and Orlando Olivera in game two as the Spartans swept Lindenwood University-Belleville on Monday to go 3-0 in American Midwest Conference play.
Missouri Baptist (13-1, 3-0 AMC) scored first in both games on Monday and picked-up two important conference victories.
Randy Wynne took the hill in game one and picked-up a nice birthday present as the hurler turned 22 on Monday. The junior tossed six innings and allowed two earned with six strikeouts in his third win of the season.
Jeff Smith led things off in game one with a home run and put MBU on the board first. It was Smith's second consecutive game with a homer after tagging his first on Friday.
The Spartan bats were relatively quiet until the fourth as the home team posted its second run of the game. MBU cashed-in on three more runs in the fifth as Hector Candelaria hit his first big fly of the season to make it a 5-0 game.
Both teams added two more runs in the sixth, but Missouri Baptist shut things down in the seventh. Carl Jameson came on in relief and threw just 14 pitches to complete the win for the Spartans.
Orlando Olivera and Eli Roundtree put the Spartans up early in game two as the duo continue to be a force in the heart of the order. Olivera blasted his third home run of the season to left-center field and Roundtree followed his at-bat with a homerun of his own to make it a quick 2-0 game.
Lindenwood answered in the top of the second with two runs of its own and posted one more in the third to take a 3-2 lead. The Spartans, however, regained the advantage in the bottom-half. Brent Zimmerman led-off with a double and later scored on a fielding error before Aaron Pangilinan tagged an RBI double and gave MBU a 4-3 lead.
Orlando Olivera continued his impressive afternoon at the plate and hit his second blast of the day in the fifth inning, another solo shot, to make it a 5-3 contest.
MBU added four more runs in the game and cruised to its 13th win of the season.
The win was number 600 in the career of Spartan Head Coach Eddie Uschold. He is now just 16 wins away from win No. 600 at Missouri Baptist.
The Spartans will add two more dates to the home schedule this week as they will welcome Lourdes University (Ohio) for two doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday. Game time on Wednesday is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
