Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] Missouri Baptist Baseball needed a lift after dropping its last two conference series and got just that on Friday. After a 4-2 victory, MBU posted 14 runs in game two on the way to a 14-2 win in the final game of the day.
Missouri Baptist (29-6, 13-5 MBU) put together two solid games on Friday and got great pitching in both.
The Spartans took game one as Dave Mullins headed to the hill looking for his fifth win of the season. The starting pitcher tossed six strong innings and allowed seven hits and two runs with six strikeouts.
The Spartans put the first two runs up in the second thanks to a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. After a Brian Poupore single and a Tim Cusick double, it was second and third with just one out. Eagles' starter Braxton Rhodes let one get away and the wild pitch scored Poupore to make it 1-0 MBU.
Austyn Nagamine followed with a sacrifice fly, which scored Cusick, and gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead after one and a half innings.
Williams Baptist tied it in the bottom of the third. Kagen Brown hit a 2-0 pitch over the left-field wall to make it a 2-2 game. It was Brown's first home run of the season.
Missouri Baptist posted what ended as the winning run in the top of the fourth. With two out and the bases loaded, Brent Zimmerman singled-home the game winning run on a hit to right field.
Marcus Crescentini entered in the bottom of the sixth and recorded his eighth save of the year.
In game two, the first three innings became key as the Spartan offense jumped all over Williams Baptist's starter Ethan Quarles. MBU posted one in the first, five in the second and four in the third and entered the fourth inning up 10-0.
MBU's Zimmerman continued a big day with four hits in game two. The Spartan shortstop was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with four RBI and a home run.
Eli Roundtree hit his ninth home run of the season in the game while Brian Poupore went 3-4 with three RBI.
The unsung hero of this one, however, was Ryan Stapp. The senior from Bakersfield, Calif., grabbed his fifth win of the season and lowered his season Earned Run Average to 1.63.
The Spartans will finish the series on Saturday with one, nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. in Walnut Ridge, Ark.
