SPARTANS FALL TO SCOTS IN WINNER’S BRACKET

Box Score

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREMissouri Baptist baseball looked like it was going to have another nice day at the office on Saturday. That was, until, the seventh inning. Lyon (Ark.) posted six runs in the final three innings and stormed into the American Midwest Conference Baseball Tournament Finals with a 9-5 win over the Spartans.

Missouri Baptist (38-11, 18-9 AMC) entered Saturday's contest looking for its second consecutive upset in the tournament and began putting up runs in the second inning.

The Spartans trailed by one in the bottom of the second and tied the game, thanks in large part, to Eli Roundtree. The Spartan right fielder led-off the inning with a double and came around to score two batters later. After Tim Cusick reached on a walk to put runners at first and second with one out, Brian Poupore hit an RBI single to right center to make it a 1-1 ballgame.

MBU took its first lead in the bottom of the third after holding the Scots scoreless in the top-half. Another lead-off double, this time by Aaron Collazo set the table for the second Missouri Baptist run. Brent Zimmerman hit an RBI single to plate the second baseman and made it a 2-1 lead.

The Scots fired back with two in the top of the fourth before Brian Poupore drove-in his second run of the contest in the bottom half. The Spartan center fielder hit a solo home run to left to tie the game at three.

It was a back and forth struggle throughout the early evening hours in Springfield as the lead continued to change hands.

MBU took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. This was, however, the last lead that the Spartans would gain. Aaron Pangilinan singled home Brent Zimmerman and posted the fourth run for Missouri Baptist with two outs in the inning.

The Spartans tacked-on another late run in the bottom of the ninth, but it was to no avail as the Scots punched their ticket to the finals.

Missouri Baptist will now await the winner of William Woods (Mo.) and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) on Monday in Springfield, Ill. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Robin Roberts Stadium.
