Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Taylor Giese's hat trick helped lead Missouri Baptist past Stephens College 4-0 Saturday afternoon to notch its first win of the season.
Giese was the offensive story for the Spartans. The senior continued to give Stephens goalkeeper Jordan Mayle fits by rattling off 10 shots throughout the contest. Six of those shots were on goal and three found the back of the net.
Missouri Baptist (1-4) dominated from start to finish, outshooting the Stars 31-7. However, despite outshooting Stephens (2-5) by 12 in the first half, the Spartans led just 1-0 after the first 45 minutes.
Giese had a very good chance to start the scoring in the 17th minute when she pushed her shot just right of the post on a breakaway opportunity. She made up for the earlier miss by scoring moments later from the right wing to put the Spartans up 1-0.
Outside of Giese's goal, Missouri Baptist fired up 14 more shots, but couldn't find the net allowing Stephens to stay within striking distance.
Whatever was said at halftime seemed to strike a tune with the Spartan offense. Less than one minute into the second half, Megan Allen buried one past the Stars goalkeeper to put Missouri Baptist up 2-0.
The Spartans continued to dominate in terms of possession and put the game away later in the half with two more goals. Giese's second goal came in the 55th minute when she dribbled left, stopped, came center and snuck one past the keeper to put Missouri Baptist up 3-0.
Her third and final goal occurred with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. This time she scored once again from the right wing to complete the hat trick and put the Spartans ahead by four goals.
Keeper Lizzie Kahn was solid in net to earn her first shutout of the season. Kahn had five saves in the victory and was aided by a strong Spartan defense.
Missouri Baptist will go for its second consecutive victory when it plays Hannibal-LaGrange Wednesday afternoon.
