Box Score ST. LOUIS [BOX SCORE] – Donna Jolliff scored Missouri Baptist's lone goal in the Spartans 1-1 draw to William Woods Wednesday afternoon.
Jolliff wasted no time jolting the Spartans (2-5-1) to an early lead. She took the ball from left to center and buried it into the back of the net just over a minute into the match. It was Jolliff's first goal of the season after scoring 15 times a season ago. She had missed the previous three games due to injury.
The stats indicate how closely the Spartans and Owls (3-5-2) played each other all afternoon long. Missouri Baptist edged Williams Woods in the shot column 21-20 and both teams recorded 12 shots on goal.
Spartan goalie Alex Lair registered 12 saves, including two tough first-half shots. Lair made an impressive diving stop on Elyssa Cappaert's shot in the 13th minute and recovered to also stop Halle Schroeder's put-back off the rebound.
Both teams had multiple scoring chances in the opening half, but Lair and Owls goalkeeper Ashley Parisi kept it a 1-0 game heading into the break.
After 19 shots combined in the first half, the final 45 minutes provided nearly just as much firepower.
William Woods broke through in the 52nd minute with a goal from Halle Schroeder. Lair charged toward the ball, but Schroeder tracked it down just inside the box and poked it past her to net the equalizer.
The remainder of the half and two 10-minute overtime periods weren't enough for either team to capitalize on a scoring opportunity. The evenly matched game would eventually result in a 1-1 tie.
Jolliff, who led Missouri Baptist with seven shots, provided a few late threats. She couldn't get another into the net, but neither could William Woods.
The Spartans hit the road and face Park (Mo.) on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
