Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist shutdown Freed-Hardeman in the second half to come from behind and defeat the Lions 5-2 Saturday night.
The Spartans (8-5, 6-2) outscored Freed-Hardeman 4-0 in the final 45 minutes after trailing 2-1 at the halftime break. The Lions (2-7-3, 2-4-2) losing streak reached four with the loss.
Jackie Hagan got the Spartans off to a quick start before Freed answered back and took the lead. The freshman put in her first collegiate goal in the 4th minute to give MBU the 1-0 lead. However, the Lions leading scorer Nina Carolissen quickly answered with her seventh goal of the season in the 7th minute to tie things up.
The score remained knotted up at 1-1 until the 38th minute when the Lions took the lead before the half when Melissa Ross scored in the 38th minute. MBU trailed at the half before mounting its comeback.
Freshman Alexandra Heinz also netted her first career goal in this game at a good time. Her 54th minute goal started the comeback and tied the game at 2-2. After the freshmen started things, sophomores Morgan Mell and Alyssa Matz finished things off.
The former Triad High School teammates scored the final three goals for MBU down the stretch. Mell knocked home the eventual game-winner with a goal in the 72nd minute. Matz then added an insurance goal in the 74th minute and another right before the final whistle in the 88th. The goal was Mell's second on the year and goals three and four for Matz.
The Spartans now wrap up the regular season with three of their final four games at home. They take on Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday from CBC Field at 11:00 am.
