SPARTANS POST CRITICAL VICTORY OVER SCOTS

Box Score

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREJust when the Spartans needed it, Alyssa Matz came through. In the 88th minute, the Spartan sophomore notched her fifth goal of 2016 to break a 2-2 tie and gave the visitors a big 3-2 win in Batesville, Ark.

Missouri Baptist (10-5, 8-2 AMC) took a 1-0 deficit into halftime, but came roaring back after the break. MBU posted three second-half goals, including the final one from Matz, to grab the road win.

Lyon opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Jessica Souza posted the first tally of the game. The score, which was her 12th of the season, gave the Scots the early lead.

Missouri Baptist entered the half looking for offense heading into the final 45 minutes after having just five shots in the opening frame. They did just that and combined for 13 shots in the second on the way to the win.

The Spartans knotted the score at one apiece in the 57th minute as Riley Janvrin capitalized on her opportunity and put the momentum in Missouri Baptist's favor.

Nearly six minutes later, it was Cassandra Willhite to do the damage. The sophomore posted her first goal of the season and gave Missouri Baptist its first lead of the game, 2-1.

Lyon posted a goal in the 79th minute, but Matz's game winner put the Spartans in the driver's seat for a potential home game for the American Midwest Conference Tournament.

The Spartans will now head into the game against Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) looking to improve to 9-2 in the AMC.
