Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME ONE BOX] [GAME TWO BOX] They say everything is bigger in Texas. Just over a week into the 2016 Missouri Baptist Baseball season and the Spartans had yet to win multiple games in a row. That was, however, until Friday evening. MBU began the weekend with a Texas-sized win (11-1) and followed it with another (3-1) to close the day with two victories over Jarvis Christian (Texas).
Missouri Baptist (3-3, 0-0 AMC) came into the weekend 1-3 and was looking for two big wins to help spark the team. The Spartans got just that as the team rattled-off 11 runs in its first game of the day.
Brian Poupore continued his hot start to the 2016 season. The center fielder went 2-4 on the day with an RBI and two runs scored. Angel Cruz also picked-up a pair of hits, but the model of consistency in the game came from catcher, Hector Candeleria. The Spartan backstop went 3-3 on the day with an RBI.
Missouri Baptist has been going through a slight power outage, but John Hagan ended that trend. The first baseman hit the first round-tripper of the season for the Spartans as the team cruised to its most lopsided win of the year.
The first game of the day also marked the first game of the season for hurler Jared Crescentini. The starter, and brother of former Spartan Marcus Crescentini, made quick work of the Bulldog offense. He allowed just five hits over the course of five innings pitched, as he collected his first win of the year.
Game two was a much closer affair, but the result remained the same. Emilio Griego got the nod for Jarvis Christian and found success keeping the big Spartan bats silent. He allowed just three hits, but was tagged for three earned runs on the day. Culver Plant and Kyle Keck picked-up the hits in the game, as Plant also recorded two RBI and a run.
Robert Evans had a big outing and allowed just one run on six hits with six strikeouts through five innings, but left the game with the game tied at one.
Nick Hynes entered the game in the sixth, and thanks to two Spartan runs in the bottom-half of the inning, the California native was able to grab his first win of the season.
The Spartans will head back out on Saturday to go for its first season sweep of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
