Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME ONE BOX] [GAME TWO BOX] After starting the season 1-3 against two top opponents, Missouri Baptist Baseball has settled into the 2016 season quite nicely. Following two big performances 24 hours prior, the Spartans grabbed two more wins on Saturday over Jarvis Christian (Texas) 4-1 and 9-4.
Missouri Baptist (5-3, 0-0 AMC) picked-up two more wins thanks to solid pitching in game one and big bats in game two.
Keven Long got the nod on the hill in game one and didn't disappoint. The Dixon, Ill., native went five solid innings and allowed one run on six hits with three strikeouts to his credit.
Brian Poupore, who is currently leading MBU in hitting, added an RBI in the first game and went 1-4.
Culver Plant also continued his solid play at the plate. The junior went 2-3 on the day with two runs scored. Third baseman Austin Rieman was also solid. The junior went 2-4 and pulled his batting average up to an even .300
Missouri Baptist jumped-out to an early 3-0 lead in the game and never looked back as the team moved above .500 for the first time in 2016.
Game two had more offense, but the result was the same as Missouri Baptist plated nine in the contest, five of which came in the first three innings. Starting pitcher Donnie Lovelady picked-up his first win as a Spartan as he kept the Bulldog lineup off-balance for four innings. In the fifth, however, Jarvis Christian led-off with a walk and put together its best offensive effort of the weekend. Three hits and an error helped JCC to a three-run inning and cut the MBU lead to 9-4, but that was where the production halted.
Ben Carrasco tossed one inning and allowed one hit, while Drew Montero took the hill in the seventh and recorded two strikeouts and preserved the win.
On the offensive side, second baseman Josh Miguel picked-up his first multi-hit game for the Spartans. Plant, Poupore and Kyle Keck crossed the plate twice, while Mike Levar notched his first double in 2016 in a pinch-hitting appearance.
With the wins, Missouri Baptist will head back out onto the road next weekend with three scheduled games in Mississippi against William Carey (Miss.).
