BASEBALL PUTS ON A SHOW IN HOME OPENER

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOXMissouri Baptist baseball clubbed 12 runs over the course of two, seven inning affairs on Friday, and handed Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 4-1 and 8-0 losses.

Missouri Baptist (8-5, 0-0 AMC) broke-out the big bats in a "home" game at St. Charles Community College on Friday, but posted its first run thanks to some head's up base running by Jared Hagley. On base as a courtesy runner, the junior stole second and nabbed third on a throwing error, which allowed Daniel Bradley to swipe home plate and put the Spartans in the lead.

The Tigers tied it in the top of the sixth, but MBU regained the lead in the bottom-half for good. Steven Somerville was charged with a balk, with runners at second and third, and MBU took the lead back.

Later in the inning, with runners on the corners, Missouri Baptist put on the double steal and it worked to perfection. Dakota Wesleyan Cole Wenande cut-off the throw from the catcher and tried to get Brian Poupore, but the Spartan center fielder beat the throw and extended the lead to 3-1.

Donnie Lovelady looked solid in his outing and allowed just one run in his nearly six innings of work. Austin Sweet came on in relief and grabbed the win after recording just one out in the game.

Game two was an entirely different story as Spartan hurler Keven Long had complete command of his entire pitching arsenal. Long allowed just three hits in six full innings, and posted his second win of the season after just tossing 86 pitches.

Missouri Baptist's bats were outstanding and posted three in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. It was the first shutout of the year for the Spartans.

The home team got production from the top and bottom of the order in game two, especially out of second baseman Josh Miguel. The junior went 3-3 in the game with an RBI and a run scored.

Leadoff man Tim Hergert also saw the ball well in the second game. The shortstop went 3-4 with two RBI in the game.

Missouri Baptist will likely make its Spartan Baseball Field debut on Saturday as the two teams are set to square-off twice more before the day concludes. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
