Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] Missouri Baptist's Jared Crescentini was nothing short of great in his outing in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday. The junior tossed six innings and struck-out eight batters as Spartan Baseball rolled to 10-2 and 7-2 victories over Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).
Missouri Baptist (10-5, 0-0 AMC) looked sharp and effective early in game one as the offense exploded in the second. The Spartans tallied six runs and controlled the game from that point forward.
With a 1-0 lead, Hector Candelaria put up some insurance with a big single. The catcher drove a 1-0 pitch into left field, which scored two, and made it a 3-0 lead. Brian Poupore also drove in two runs later in the inning as the game was in the hands of Crescentini to preserve the win.
Crescentini, the starting pitcher, commanded the strike zone on Saturday and held the Tigers to two runs on the day.
Poupore finished 2-4 while five Spartans recorded a multi-hit game. Among those was right fielder Angel Cruz. The junior went 2-4 on the day with an RBI.
While game one was a runaway, it was the final inning that provided some excitement as the game ended on a triple play. With Ben Carasco on the mound in relief, and runners at first and second, Chris Combs hit a low line drive down the first base line. John Hagan collected it, tagged the base, threw to second to get the runner off the bag. Shortstop Tim Hergert tossed the ball back down to first and got the runner off the bag at first to get the triple play.
After the excitement of game one, MBU equaled it in the series finale. Bobby Evans got the nod on the hill in game two, and allowed an unearned run, but was extremely effective as the game progressed. Evans tossed four innings and allowed just one earned run on the way to his first win of the year.
Missouri Baptist answered in the bottom of the first. Daniel Bradley and John Hagan recorded back-to-back doubles and quickly gave the Spartans a 3-1 advantage.
Tyler Greminger extended the lead to 4-1 with one swing of the bat in the second. The outfielder crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left-center field wall and posted his first round-tripper of the season. He finished 2-3 on the day with two RBI.
The Spartans added another insurance run in the fourth and two in the fifth on the way to the victory.
With the win, MBU has now won five straight and have been led by Poupore and Hergert. The duo are both riding a nine-game hitting streak.
Missouri Baptist will remain at home to face Park (Mo.) on Friday in the first of a three-game American Midwest Conference set. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
