SPARTANS SECURE SERIES AGAINST OWLS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOXMissouri Baptist Baseball headed into its second American Midwest Conference series of the season against a William Woods (Mo.) squad looking to solidify its position in the top three of the standings and did just that. The Spartans scored seven in game one and nine in game two on the way to 7-4 and 9-3 wins in Fulton, Mo.

Missouri Baptist (16-6, 4-1 AMC) needed a come-from-behind effort in game one and did it with the big bats in the latter innings. The Owls posted two runs in the second inning as errors and wild pitches came into play. William Woods' Patrick Dillon reached on an error and came around to score the game's first run on a wild pitch to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Grant Garrett later singled home a run to complete the two-run inning, and the Spartans had their work cut-out for them.

Missouri Baptist began cutting into the lead in the third. Josh Miguel led-off the inning out of the nine-hole and bunted for a single to get things started. The second baseman scored later in the inning on a Culver Plant sacrifice fly and made it a 2-1 game.

The Spartans posted the tying run in the fourth and continued its hit parade throughout. Missouri Baptist scored two more in the sixth and seventh and helped Donnie Lovelady to his team-leading fourth win of the season.

Brian Poupore homered in the fifth inning to give the Spartans the lead. It was his first of the season.

Angel Cruz led the Spartans in hits in the game. The outfielder went 2-3 with an RBI in the win. Hector Candeleria led the team with three RBI.

Game two began with a bang as the Spartans jumped all over William Woods starter Ryan Phillips. The junior transfer from University of Missouri allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits as Missouri Baptist continued its solid play at the plate.

The Spartans recorded the game's first run in the first. Leadoff man Tim Hergert reached on a walk and came around to score thanks to a Daniel Bradley RBI and made it 1-0.

The Spartans built on the lead in the second. With John Hagan standing 90 feet away from home, Josh Miguel grounded-out to second, which scored the run, and MBU went up by two. Austyn Nagamine, who reached on an error, also came around to score later in the inning and Missouri Baptist took a 3-0 lead into the third.

Missouri Baptist scored one in the third, one in the fifth, another two in the eighth and two more in the ninth to preserve the series win.

Jared Crescentini picked-up his fourth win of the season and is now 4-0 on the year. The junior tossed seven full innings and allowed just five hits and one run with 13 strikeouts, a new career-high. Jake Triulzi and Austin Sweet came on in relief, respectively, and finished things out.
