Missouri Baptist (34-10, 17-4 AMC) took full advantage of the home field on Saturday in game one. Williams Baptist posted the game's first run in the top of the third as a Spartan throwing error allowed Tucker Smith to get from first all the way home to make it 1-0.
In the bottom-half, the Spartans tallied their first runs of the day. Missouri Baptist posted three runs in the inning, aided by two Eagles' errors, and grabbed a 3-1 lead as both the bottom and top of the order got in on the action. Josh Miguel, Brian Poupore and Austin Rieman all recorded an RBI in the inning.
Missouri Baptist had more of the same in store in the fourth inning. Two out rallies has become a specialty for the Spartans in 2016 and in game one on Saturday, the showed it yet again. Williams Baptist recorded another error, one of two in the inning, and gave the home team additional outs.
The Spartans, led by two stolen bases (from Greminger and Miguel), once again were sparked by the speed of the bottom of the order and plated two more.
Keven Long tossed another gem for the Spartans en-route to his fifth win of the 2016 season. The junior hurler boasts an unblemished 5-0 record this season after his five and two-thirds inning performance. His only real trouble came in the top of the sixth as the Eagles put together a two-out rally after Long retired the first two batters of the inning.
Williams Baptist made a run at it in the seventh and put runners at second and third with no outs, but Brandon Nunn gained control of the game. The Spartan closer got a groundout back to the pitchers mound for the first out, and after an intentional pass to Ryan Shelton, struck out the final batter to end the threat. Nunn recorded the last two outs of the game on strikeouts to secure the series victory.
Game two was a completely different story. Williams Baptist rebounded with a nine-run effort and grabbed a win in the final game of the weekend, 11-3. The Eagles scored 11 runs on 16 hits and led from start to finish.
Williams Baptist posted two runs in the top of the first and were off to the races. Ryan Shelton had a monster game for the Eagles. The senior from Brentwood, Tenn., went 4-4 with an RBI and three runs scored as he went a home run short of the cycle.
Missouri Baptist posted three runs in the getaway game and recorded 10 hits in the game. Both Mike Levar and Angel Cruz posted two hits in the game.
The Spartans will head back out on the road next week as the team will head to Culver-Stockton (Mo.) on Wednesday in non-conference action.
