Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] Missouri Baptist needed a couple of innings to get into a groove. The Spartans posted single runs in the first two innings before hanging a six spot on the board in the third to take the reigns in a 10-1 win in game one in Monday's series finale doubleheader. Late inning scoring led to the second win of the day as the Spartans completed the sweep of Harris-Stowe (Mo.) in a 14-9 victory.
Missouri Baptist (39-11, 22-5 AMC) put together two commanding offensive efforts on Monday as the series concluded under cloudy skies and cold weather. The Spartans put 24 runs home on the day as the team will enter Wednesday's American Midwest Conference Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed.
Game one was a display of raw power for the Spartans as leadoff man Tim Hergert led the charge. The shortstop went 3-4 on the day with three RBI, but two of those hits traveled out of the park. His two round-trippers, combined with one each from Austin Rieman and Brandon Schlictig made four in the game for the Spartans. While Rieman went 2-3 at the plate in game one, Schlictig's lone hit was his grand slam in the third inning.
Catcher Austyn Nagamine also posted a multi hit day. The senior went 2-3 from the dish.
The Hornets got a fast start on the Spartans in game two, but more late-inning excitement pushed the Spartans past two, three-run deficits, to take the final win of the regular season.
Mike Levar got the start at third base in the second game and didn't disappoint. The junior gave a 1-2 pitch a ride over the left-center field wall with a two-run home run in the eighth. He was 2-4 with three RBI in the game.
Harris-Stowe took a 2-0 lead in the first before the Spartans responded in the bottom-half. Missouri Baptist plated four in the first of their own to make it a 4-2 game.
The Hornets regained the lead in the third with a three-run outburst and took a 5-4 advantage. More runs in the top of the fourth led to the biggest deficit of the day, three runs, as Missouri Baptist trailed 7-4 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Though the Spartans cut the deficit to one in the fourth, but did not finally get over the hump until the seventh. A three-run rally in the sixth tied the game at nine-all before Missouri Baptist took the lead for good in the seventh.
Schlictig led-off the inning with a single, to set-up a big at-bat from game two catcher Hector Candelaria. The senior backstop sent a 1-0 pitch into the gap in left center, which scored courtesy runner Jared Hagley, and gave the home team the lead for good.
The Spartans will now enter this week's AMC Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. They will begin play against the No. 8-seed, Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. The two championship game qualifiers will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, set to begin in just over a week.
