Box Score ST. LOUIS—[BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist struggled to figure out Ryan Phillips on Friday. The transfer from University of Missouri tossed a gem in a full nine inning performance as he led the William Woods (Mo.) Owls to a 2-1 win in the rubber game of a big American Midwest Conference series.
Missouri Baptist (12-9, 5-4 AMC) couldn't get much going on offense as Pat Boyle tossed a solid game, which kept the visitors in it until the end. Boyle went six innings and allowed two runs on five strikeouts in the effort.
"It was another outstanding outing by Pat," said head coach Eddie Uschold. "He deserved a much better fate."
The Owls plated one in the fourth and one in the sixth before the Spartans finally broke through in the seventh thanks to a pair of fielding errors after Austin Rieman's leadoff single to start the inning. Tommy Nawa singled in the next at-bat, and after an error by Patrick Dillon, Rieman came around to score. This, however, was the lone run to cross the plate for the team from St. Louis.
Brandon Nunn entered in the seventh and put together another big performance. The senior finished the game and recorded three strikeouts and didn't allow a single hit in his two innings.
After the game, Uschold re-iterated that though things are tough now, the season is far from over.
"Still a lot of season to go and a lot can happen," said Uschold.
The Spartans will return home on Tuesday when they will host Hannibal-LaGrange in a mid-week AMC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and can be heard on the Spartan Digital Network at www.spartandigitalnetwork.com.
