SPARTAN BASEBALL GETS BACK ON TRACK

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOXMissouri Baptist trailed briefly on Wednesday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., but quickly erased a one-run deficit after a half inning of game one. The Spartans posted 19 runs in two games in 10-2 and 9-1 wins against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.).

Missouri Baptist (14-9, 7-4 AMC) feasted on Trojan pitching all day after hitting just .207 in its last two American Midwest Conference series. The Spartans recorded 12 hits in both contests on the way to two big wins.

Robby Brewster got the nod on the hill in game one and allowed just one unearned run in his outing on the way to his third win of the season. Brewster tossed five innings and allowed the game's only hits, three to be exact, as he struck-out four overall. Three of his final four strikeouts came as he struck-out the side in the fifth.

The Spartans trailed briefly after a Trojan run scored in the first due to a wild throw, but things calmed-down from that point forward.

In the bottom of the first, Culver Plant and Drew Kitson both singled before Chad Ramsey began his big day. The first baseman cleared the bases with a two RBI triple, one of three hits in the game for the senior, to make it 2-1. John Hagan singled Ramsey home in the next at-bat and put the game away for good.

Ramsey nearly hit for the cycle in the contest. After his first inning triple, the Damon, Texas native recorded a single in the third and a monster home run in the fifth, which hit off the top of the scoreboard in right-center field.

Both Plant and Kitson also hit three-baggers in the game as Missouri Baptist ended with three triples over the course of the seven inning affair.

Bryan Morales, Brett Mann and Brandon Nunn entered in relief and preserved the win by holding the Trojans hitless in the final two innings.

Game two became a pitcher's duel as Mailik Jones, in his first start of the season, locked horns with Hannibal-LaGrange's David Evans. The Spartans were held to two hits through four innings before breaking through in the fifth. Missouri Baptist posted three runs in the fifth from four hits.

Justin Ortiz led the Spartans in the finale at the plate from the bottom of the order. The junior from Land O' Lakes, Fla., went 3-4 in the game with a stolen base and a run scored.

Ramsey went 1-3 in the second game, but made his hit count in the sixth as he knocked Evans out of the game with a solo home run to lead-off the inning.

"(Evans) was solid, but the third time through we made some adjustments," said Uschold. "We got big hits from Culver and Drew, which was just what we needed."

The Spartan bats came through in the latter stages, but the pitching of Mailik Jones was the story of the game. The junior transfer from Georgia Gwinnett tossed five innings and allowed just three hits and two walks as he struck-out seven batters. Nick Hynes, Miguel Ruiz and Nick Vichio finished the game and allowed just two hits in the final four innings.

After the game, it was clear that Spartan Coach Eddie Uschold was happy with his starting pitching.

"We really pitched well again," said Uschold. "Brewster was solid in game one and Malik Jones was outstanding in game two.

The wins on Wednesday propelled the Spartans to seven wins in AMC play in 2017, the second highest win total in the conference thus far.

Missouri Baptist will now look toward the weekend to an important series with Harris-Stowe (Mo.). The Hornets are currently undefeated with a perfect 5-0 record in AMC play. Friday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Spartan Baseball Field. The series finale is tentatively scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, but inclement weather may threaten that game.
