Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Baseball continued its dominance over Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) on Wednesday. After having to move the game to Jacksonville, Ill., the Spartans dropped nine on the Trojans in a 9-0 shutout to complete the season series with a sweep.
Missouri Baptist (24-10, 16-5 AMC) looked like a Top 25 team on Wednesday, just a day after returning to the NAIA Top 25 for the first time since the Preseason Poll was released in November. In addition to its run production, five pitchers combined to allow just two hits in one of the best pitching efforts of the season.
The Spartans went to work on the offensive end in the second as the team dropped five on the Trojans in the inning. John Hagan and Justin Ortiz led-off the inning with back-to-back singles and thanks to three Trojan errors in the frame, Missouri Baptist posted the crooked number to get things going. Aaron Collazo and Chad Ramsey added doubles in the inning.
On the whole, Missouri Baptist scored nine runs on 13 hits and totaled five doubles on the day. Collazo, Culver Plant and Tommy Nawa led the team with two RBI apiece.
The pitching, however, became the real story as Mailik Jones took the ball for Missouri Baptist. The junior from Atlanta put together another big start for the Spartans and recorded his third win of 2017 as he has helped to solidify a four-man rotation heading down the home stretch of 2017.
Jones allowed just one hit in three innings and racked-up four strikeouts. Miguel Ruiz, Brett Mann and Bryan Morales all provided hitless relief appearances as Anthony Cosme went two strong innings and allowed just one hit.
With the win, the Spartans will enter the weekend with an American Midwest Conference best, 16 wins on the season. The Spartans have just nine conference games remaining in 2017 before the end of the regular season.
