Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] Two, one run wins were what it came down to for Missouri Baptist on Saturday. After a comeback and what ended as the best start of the season for Mike Syrett, the Spartans picked-up two big wins over Park (Mo.) in the doubleheader finale in St. Louis.
Missouri Baptist (27-10, 19-5 AMC) allowed three, fourth inning runs to Park, but needed a comeback effort in the sixth to plunder the win away from the Pirates.
Donnie Lovelady was on cruise control until the second time through the Park lineup. John Lozano Jr. led-off the inning with a double and scored thanks to a Shane Kirkwood, two-RBI double two batters later to make it a 2-0 game. A wild pitch later allowed David White to cross the plate.
The Pirates maintained their lead until the bottom of the sixth when an error proved deadly to the visitors. A leadoff walk began the inning as Culver Plant and Drew Kitson both received a free pass before consecutive popouts to second put Park just one out away from escaping.
Nate Green singled home the first run of the game for the Spartans, but an error on a ground ball by Kirkwood, however, allowed the two tying runs to score. Justin Ortiz singled home the game winner in the nine-hole and handed the Spartans the come-from-behind win.
In game two, Missouri Baptist began the scoring in the second. Brandon Schlichtig singled-home the first run of the game in the bottom of the second to give his team a 1-0 lead. An unearned run in the fourth made it 2-0 while Mike Syrett continued to deal.
Syrett allowed just earned run in eight and two-thirds innings on the way to his fourth win of the season. Nick Vichio entered with two outs and struck-out David White to preserve his second save of the day. Vichio was stellar in both games and struck-out all four batters he faced.
Missouri Baptist will play host to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Tuesday before hosting Lyon (Ark.) in the final home conference series of 2017.
