SPARTANS FEND OFF ELIMINATION, TOP HORNETS

Box Score

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist posted six runs across the fifth and sixth innings Thursday afternoon to continue its stay in the AMC Tournament. The top-seeded Spartans eliminated fourth-seeded Harris-Stowe with an 11-4 victory.

The elimination game from Henderson, Tenn. stood knotted at 1-1 with four innings in the books. Left fielder Kyle Keck helped get the navy and white out in front with a leadoff double to start the fifth. Three more hits followed from the top of the lineup.

Aaron Collazo singled home Keck to give MBU a 2-1 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish. Culver Plant doubled home Collazo one batter later, and Drew Kitson capped the hit parade with an RBI single to up the lead to 4-1. The top three in the Spartan order combined to go 7-for-12 with six runs driven in.

The Spartans took advantage of two errors to take a 7-1 lead after the top of the sixth. Tommy Nawa hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Justin Ortiz, who reached on an error. Collazo also brought home Keck in the sixth after both picked up base hits. The final run of the inning came home off a dropped fly ball.

Spartan starter Pat Boyle pitched around some control troubles and allowed just one run through the first six innings. The Hornets got to him in the seventh however, when Dylan Yankle homered over the left field fence to cut the MBU advantage to 7-4. Boyle picked up the win with a final line of 6.2 innings, five hits, four earned runs, seven strikeouts and eight walks.

Nawa, John Hagan and Miles Fore all drove in runs for MBU in a three-run ninth inning. MBU extended its lead to 11-4 with four runs on four hits. The insurance runs proved vital, as Harris-Stowe loaded the bases in the bottom half. Nick Hynes eventually shut the door when he struck out Jared Corbett looking to end the game.

Eight Spartans recorded a hit in the game. Plant led the way with a 4-5 performance and two RBI's. Fore also drove in two runs and went 3-5 at the dish. Collazo and Keck also had multi-hit games.

Rain has played tricks with the schedule of the AMC Championship and has caused a slew of changes. Missouri Baptist will now have an off day on Friday and will play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday against the loser of Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) and Lyon (Ark.), who will play in Friday's second game of the day.
