SPARTANS RUN OUT OF GAS IN SPLIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HENDERSON, Tenn. – [BOX SCOREAfter a tremendous outing by Miguel Ruiz in game one to lead the Spartans to the Championship round, Missouri Baptist ran out of energy against the Lyon (Ark.) Scots. The Spartans took game one of the day against the Owls 12-5, but dropped the finale to the Scots, 5-2.

Missouri Baptist (41-14, 21-6 AMC) looked to take the series to an if-necessary game on Tuesday, but came up short in the final game of the day.

The Spartans trailed early to the Owls in game one, but stormed back thanks in large part to a big pitching performance by Miguel Ruiz. Malik Jones got the nod on the hill, but was only able to record two outs before being pulled in favor of Ruiz. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., finished the game and went eight and a third innings to secure his second win of the season. Ruiz allowed just two runs on six hits.

The Spartans trailed 5-2 after two innings, but continued to put together solid at-bats throughout. They scored two in the third and fourth to take a 6-5 lead and blew the game open in the sixth. Missouri Baptist posted six more runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory.

Drew Kitson and Angel Cruz both homered in the game as the Spartans advanced to the finale.

Missouri Baptist (41-14, 21-6 AMC) looked to take the series to an if-necessary game on Tuesday, but came up short in the final game of the day.

Game two got started in a strange manner as the first three runs of the game were all unearned.

The Scots got the scoring started in the third as a strikeout got away from catcher Brandon Schlichtig, and allowed Easton Moore to reach. The Scots' shortsopt came around to score two batters later as Kyle West drove in the lead run to make it 1-0.

Missouri Baptist tied it in the top of the fourth. John Hagan reached on a bunt single to lead-off the inning. Then, after stealing two consecutive bases, he put the tying run 90 feet away. Kyle Keck drove Hagan home with two outs on a fielding error by Jordan Braswell and tied the game at 1-1.

The Scots posted another unearned run off Donnie Lovelady in the fifth as Kylan Barnett scored on a Spartan fielding error to make it 2-1. Lyon never relinquished this lead.

Lyon dropped three runs on Missouri Baptist in the seventh to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

Missouri Baptist tried to counter in the top of the eighth. Austin Rieman homered to lead-off the inning, and after a double followed from Hagan, Tony Roepke went to his bullpen. He brought in AMC Pitcher of the Year Tyler Tognarine, who finished things out for the Scots. The junior went the final two innings and allowed no hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

For the Scots, that makes two consecutive AMC Championship Tournament Titles in a row as both teams now will await their fate in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. Both have secured a bid and their future is in the hands of the NAIA Baseball Championship Selection Committee. The official NAIA Baseball Selection Show will be released on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. CT on NAIANetwork.com.
