LIBERTY, MO. – Missouri Baptist women's wrestling compiled a 3-1 record and earned a second-place team finish at the William Jewell Duals falling only to (9) Baker University in a very tightly contested dual Saturday.
In the first round of the tournament MoBap faced off against a solid but small Iowa Wesleyan University squad. IWU forfeited five weight classes and both teams double forfeited at two weights.
Karoline Ortiz was the only Spartan to win her contested match picking up the 10-0 technical fall against Joanna Vanderwood. The Spartans won the dual 35-16.
In the following round MBU matched up against a stout (RV) University of Saint Mary's squad. Several Spartan grapplers secured bonus points to help with the team score. At 101-pounds
Ana Bradshaw, 123-pounds
Malaicka Pierre-Louis, and 155-pounds
Tiyahna Askew all picked up first period falls.
Josette Partney secured the tech fall in her bout at 170-pounds.
Jessica Corredor won her bout via forfeit at 109-pounds. The Spartans won the dual 26-16 to move to 2-0 on the tournament.
In the third dual of the day Missouri Baptist battled familiar foe and tournament host William Jewell. This dual saw only one bout go the distance as Corredor,
Lindsay Mills, Partney, and
Shania Gowan all collected pin fall victories.
Karoline Ortiz and
Ana Bradshaw also picked up bonus points winning their bouts via technical superiority. As the lone match to go the full six minutes, Askew was in for a dog fight against Sarina Bertram who she pinned only a week ago for the title at the Missouri Women's Collegiate State Championships. Bertram seemed fired up and ready for revenge but ultimately fell short losing to Askew 7-4. MoBap defeated William Jewell 31-11 to improve their record to 3-0 on the day.
The Spartans faced a tall task in their final dual of the night against the ninth ranked squad from Baker University as they looked to claim their second team title in as many weeks. Kicking off the dual, Bradshaw secured the fall over Fatima Venya in just 45 seconds. The 109-pound bout featured MoBap's own 11
th ranked Corredor and Baker's 17
th ranked Kassidy Leiszler. In a match with high expectations Corredor exceeded them and rolled to a 10-0 technical superiority victory.
BU received the forfeit victory at 116-pounds and secured the fall in the 123-pound bout but MoBap answered back as
Karoline Ortiz picked up the tech fall, 14-4, in the 130-pound matchup. Baker would not go down in this fight as they picked up a pin during the 136-pound matchup and a decision victory at 143-pounds.
As Baker seemed to be gaining the momentum
Tiyahna Askew took out her sixth ranked opponent, Morgan Mayginnes via tech fall, 12-2, swinging things back in favor of the Spartans with only two matches remaining.
Baker locked away the dual victory as fifth ranked Elisa Robinson pinned the Spartans 11
th ranked 155-pounder,
Josette Partney. In the final match of the evening against 17
th ranked Kiya Jones,
Shania Gowan made sure to make a statement despite the result not changing the duals outcome. Gowan knocked off Jones collecting the fall less than two minutes into the bout. The Wildcats won the dual 25-23 ending the Spartans unblemished dual meet record.
The Missouri Baptist women's wrestling team continues to look for top-notch competition as they accepted the invite to compete in the NWCA National Dual meet championships in Louisville, Kentucky on January 6-7, 2022 at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
