FOREST CITY, Iowa.- In their first tournament of the season, five Spartans placed at the Waldorf University Open on Saturday, Nov. 12, three of those were first place finishes.
Freshman,
Alyssa Quezaire earned her first individual title with the Spartans in the 101-pound weight class. Quezaire made her way to the final by winning her first two matches by fall and then defeating her semifinals opponent by tech fall, 15-4. In her final match against Midland's (17) Zoe Omura, the Donaldsonville, La. native beat her competition by tech fall 12-0.
At 116-pounds
Juliana Diaz moved on to her second round as her opponent sustained an injury and she won by default. Diaz proceeds to win her next two rounds by tech fall, securing by her place in the championships. The freshman took on Hailey Holland of Missouri Valley (19) and secured her first place finish by tech fall 10-0. This was Diaz's first individual title with the Spartans as well.
The last of the first place winners for the Spartans, but certainly not least, was
Tiyahna Askew at 136-pounds. Askew won her first round by fall at 2:31 in the first period which was just a preview of her second as she defeated her next opponent by fall at 2:30. In the semifinal round, the junior took down her competition by decision with a score of 5-0 and went on to take first place where her opponent was
Eunique Davis who was wrestling unattached this meet. Askew was able to redeem herself from last year where she fell just short of the individual title.
Josette Partney, at 143-pounds, took second at the Waldorf Open, improving upon her fourth place finish from the year before. The sophomore had a bye the first round and defeated her first opponent by fall at 1:44 in and proceeded to defeat her next opponent by decision, 14-6. Partney came up short in the finals to fall to Katie Lange with Augsburg.
Sophomore,
Anastasia Hardin made her way to the semifinal round by a forfeit in the first match, a tech fall win in her second, and a fall just over a minute in in the quarterfinals. Hardin fell in the semifinals but went on to defeat her next opponent by fall, 39 seconds in. Hardin came up short in the 3
rd place match and fell to Brooklyn Hays with Augsburg.
Reese Compton,
Riley White, and
Lindsay Mills also wrestled for the Spartans but did not place. Along with
Eunique Davis,
Ana Bradshaw also wrestled unattached in this tournament.
There is a short turn around for women's wrestling as they will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 15 against Westminster College on their home turf.
