THREE SPARTAN GRAPPLERS EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Josette Partney, Jessica Corredor, and Karoline Ortiz earned All-American status over the weekend at the NAIA Women's Wrestling National Championships.

Competing at 143-pounds, Freshman Josette Partney made the most of her first trip to the NAIA national tournament. Josette earned the ninth seed heading into the event, which granted her a first round bye. During the second round of action, Partney had no time for first match jitters as she picked up the tech fall victory, 10-0, over her opponent from the host school, Jamestown University. In the round of 16, the Lafayette high school product quickly scored eight unanswered points before putting Romona Jimenez (Southern Oregon) to her back and ending the match early to punch her ticket into the quarterfinals. A win in the quarters would lock in All-American honors and a trip to the semis but Campbellsville's number one seeded Emma Walker stood in the way. Partney kept things interesting early on and had a strong upset bid going before Walker used a four-point throw to separate the score and catch Partney on her back to record the fall.

In what many refer to as the blood round Partney had her work cut out for her. This consolation round is referred to as the blood round because the winner of the match earns All-American status, whereas the loser is eliminated from the tournament once match shy. Partney opened up the bout scoring seven straight points during the first few minutes of action and seemed well on her way to becoming an All-American. Kaydince Turner (Hastings) refused to quit picking up a takedown and a push-out at the end of the first period to close the gap. During the first minute of the second period Turner scored a four-point throw to tie the bout at seven apiece and take the lead via criteria. With the momentum no longer in her favor, Partney thrived, picking up two more takedowns to ice the match and win via decision, 11-8. Grand View's Maddison Diaz sent Partney into the seventh-place bout via a 7-0 decision. Josette locked up seventh place in only 1:02 as she earned the tech fall victory 11-0 against Morgan Shines (Eastern Oregon).

At 109-pounds seventh seeded Spartan, Jessica Corredor, was upset in the first round against unseeded but eventual third place finisher, Alexis Medina (University of the Cumberlands). Being forced to fight for All-American honors the hard way, Corredor delivered. After receiving a medical forfeit in the first round of consolations, Corredor pinned Southern Oregon's Macie Stewart in the first period of action. After giving up a four-point throw to start her next bout, Corredor rattled of three takedowns and a push-out to take the 7-4 victory over Samantha Weeks (Jamestown) to keep her All-American hopes alive.

During the blood round, the junior from Orlando, Fla. left nothing to chance as she rolled through Menlo's tenth seeded Barbara Greenberg, 11-0 to claim All-American honors. Corredor dropped her next match, unable to avenge her early tournament loss to Medina (Cumberlands), this time falling 8-2. Corredor was on a roll during the seventh-place bout, picking up three early takedowns to take a 6-2 lead halfway through the first period. A scramble situation spelled trouble though as Corredor was unable to hold on and was pinned by Life University's Kory Phillips.

Karoline Ortiz was the final Spartan to earn All-American honors. At 123-pounds Ortiz received a first round bye before defeating William Penn's Mami Selemani, 11-7. Ortiz quickly punched her ticket into the quarterfinals with an 11-0 tech fall victory over Jackie Ghent (Campbellsville). The number one seeded Nichole Moore (Baker) proved to be to much for Ortiz during the quarter-finals bout, as she used a late match pin to send Karoline into the consolation bracket.

The always feared blood round stood no chance against Ortiz as she defeated Ashley Whetzal (Lyon) via technical superiority, 10-0, to lock in All-American honors. Ortiz went on to finish in eighth place after falling in her next two bouts.

In the 155-pound class, returning All-American Tiyahna Askew, battled until the end before coming up just shy of the podium. Askew opened up her tournament behind a 30 second fall before falling to eventual fourth place finisher, Sadie Antoque (Providence). Askew was leading 1-0 halfway through the second period before a throw attempt failed, giving her opponent two exposure points. Trailing 2-1, Askew was unable to close the gap as Antoque was able to stall out the remaining time. Askew responded well picking up back-to-back bonus point victories on the consolation side via tech and pin.

The Spartans fourth blood round match of the day wasn't as fortunate. Life University's fourth seeded Destinee Rivera scored early off a throw attempt by Askew. Askew seemed to be close to scoring when she slipped off Rivera's head conceding the two. Rivera controlled the center mat and was able to force Askew to commit errors as the Spartan needed to score to force Rivera to open up. Rivera earned a step out point and once again scored off Askew's aggression to take the bout 5-0.

Ana Bradshaw competed at 101-pounds for the Spartans and secured two victories via pin before being eliminated. Lindsay Mills was the final Spartan to register a victory, earning a tech fall over her opponent from Avila in the 136-pound weight class.
