MARIETTA, Ga.- Missouri Baptist women's wrestling fell in both tri-matches this afternoon against #1 Life University (Ga.) and Andrew College (Ga.). Two freshmen stepped up for the Spartans as
Maggie Ortmann and
Loghan Sumner went undefeated through both matches.
The Spartans' first dual pitted them against the Andrew College Fighting Tigers. At 103,
Lillian Hackworth battled tough, and despite her lead-taking takedown to start the second, Immawine Walden found a few more points and eventually grabbed the fall late in the second.
The Spartans answered back with a technical fall from freshman Deyton Young at 110 in the first period to bring the team score within one. The Spartans contested at 117 and 124, and both MBU wrestlers came up short. Then the Fighting Tigers received forfeits at 131 and 138.
The Spartan back half of the line-up did not give up that easily, sparked by a first-period technical fall from
Maggie Ortmann at 145.
Talia Reed was uncontested at 160 and received a forfeit. Then
Kenlee Fish went to work at 180 and grabbed the first period fall to bring the Spartans within 5, and at 207, Sumner also won via Forfeit to tie the Fighting Tigers and Spartans at 24 a piece.
Unfortunately, after falling to the third criterion, the Fighting Tigers were named victorious for most five-point wins. AC was given an additional point to make the final team score 25-24.
The second dual was a significant challenge for MBU, as they faced the reigning national champions, Life University. The Running Eagles collected wins via fall or technical superiority in the first six bouts. At 145, Ortmann wrestled hard and collected the fall in the first and placed the Spartans on the scoreboard. Life U responded as they captured two more first-period victories at 160 and 180.
Then at 207, as she trailed 3-0 early in the second against No. 13 Madeline Welch, Sumner found a four-point move to give herself the lead. Despite Welch's efforts, which included a step-out point to tie the match up, Sumner defended well and won on criteria 4-4 to finalize the match score 37-8 against the Running Eagles.
The Spartans compete tomorrow in the Eagle Madness Open hosted by Life University. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m.
