VICTORIA, TEXAS - On the road, Missouri Baptist fell behind by four runs, but the Spartans were never out of it as two innings later they took the lead and never looked back on their way to another comeback victory, 9-4 at (RV) Houston-Victoria.
Â
The Spartans had their bats ready to go on the rainy day in Texas, but could not get a timely hit in the first inning as they stranded a pair of baserunners in scoring position. The Jaguars were able to pick up a hit that they needed to get on the scoreboard, but Brooklynn Fischer and the Missouri Baptist defense were able to leave a trio of runners on base in the bottom of the first, keeping the score at 1-0.
Â
Missouri Baptist was not as lucky in the second inning as Houston-Victoria got a clutch hit with two outs in the inning that scored three runs to put the Spartans in a 4-0 hole.
Â
Down, but not out, the Spartans got one run back in the third inning after Fischer roped a double down the left field line that scored Alexi Sanchez all the way from first base.
Â
Alexandria Cafolla came in in relief of Fischer in the circle and quickly got to work, retiring the side in order in the bottom of the third.
Â
Camryn Kessler got the bats rolling in top of the fourth with a single followed by another single from Miranda Ladson. Makayla Johnson walked to load the bases with one out and Allison Leigraf walked to bring home a run. Sanchez hit an RBI single that kept the bases loaded, and a passed ball brought home a run that tied the game and moved every one up a base. Fischer brought home the go-ahead run on a ground ball, and Jacie Dees brought home Sanchez with an RBI single to make it 6-4.
Â
Ladson and Johnson each singled in the top of the fifth, and Leigraf did as well, scoring Emily Wright who was pinch-running for Ladson, bringing the score to 7-4.
Â
Dees and Jenna Achs were able to come around to score in the sixth inning giving the Spartans a 9-4 lead.Â
Â
Al. Cafolla pitched lights out for the Spartans out of the bullpen, and allowed the Spartans to chip away at their deficit and eventually pull away to win 9-4. She went five scoreless innings for Missouri Baptist, striking out four batters, allowing one hit, and one walk.
Â
Johnson led the Spartans with three hits in her four at-bats. Leigraf, Kessler, and Ladson each had a pair of hits in the victory as well.
Â
The second game of the doubleheader went down as a no contest due to weather.
Â
The Spartans will be back on the diamond on Friday when they take on Texas A&M San Antonio and No. 1 Our Lady of the Lake.
