BALDWIN CITY, Kan.:Â Josette Partney and three other Spartans brought home some hardware from the Jimmy May Open hosted by Baker University (Kan.), where Partney claimed top honors in the 160-pound weight class.
Partney tore through her bracket at 160 and racked up five wins to take home the championship. She picked up four technical falls en route to her top finish, and outscored her opponents 49-0 in five matches. In the finals, she wrestled against No. 6 Darby Weidl of Ottawa University (Kan.), where she won via tech fall to finish first.
Chloe Herrick finished fifth at 124 and went 4-2 on the day. After falling in the quarterfinal round to the No.12 ranked wrestler from the host school, Herrick rattled off two wins, which included a fall and a tight 8-6 decision. Herrick outplaced the No.12 ranked wrestler from Baker to take fifth.
Abby Chandler started that day off hot, with two falls in under four minutes, which propelled her to the semifinals. Unfortunately, Chandler fell to the fifth-place bout, where she was able to pick up another first-period fall to round out her day.
The Spartan's fourth-placer was Cara Cheng, who finished sixth at 138. After Cheng dropped her first match in a heart-breaking 7-6 decision, she put together four wins, including a win over No.20 from Central Methodist (Mo.) via fall, to advance to her sixth-place finish.
Andrea Karagiannis and Alyssa King also picked up some wins on the weekend.Â
The Spartans rest next weekend before gearing up for the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, on March 1, 2025.
