Spartans Play Shutdown Defense to Pick Up a Pair of Wins

DALLAS, TEXAS - Missouri Baptist takes care of businesses in a pair of ball games with a 5-1 victory of (RV) Mid-America Christian and a 6-0 win over Bethany, featuring great pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense.

In both contests the Spartans wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. They posted two runs in the first inning of both games. In game one against MACU, Makayla Johnson led off the inning with a double followed by an Allison Leigraf single that brought her home, and Brooklynn Fischer hit a single into center field that scored Leigraf to make it 2-0.

Johnson came back up to the plate in the second inning with one away in the inning and she roped a triple down the right field line that scored Miranda Ladson and Emily Wright, boosting their lead to 4-0.

Mid-America Christian got in the run column after two hits in the third inning, but that would be all they would get as Fischer shut them down and let her defense go to work throughout the rest of the contest.

Fischer helped grab an insurance run as she led off the sixth inning with a double, Grace McGinnis came around to score in place of Fischer on a double down the left field line from Ladson. Missouri Baptist did not end up needing the insurance as they shut down the Evangels in the top of the seventh to go on to win 5-1.

Fischer and Johnson led the squad with a pair of hits, and Johnson picked up two RBIs and a run scored in the first of two games. Fischer struck out four Evangels in her seven innings of work, and her defense played error-free defense throughout the game. Jenna Achs had to stay alert in right field as she recorded six putouts.

As the away team on the scoreboard in game two the Spartans got the bats rolling early, as mentioned before. A pair of singles by Leigraf and Alexi Sanchex and Jacie Dees getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases for Fischer, and she came through for MBU, hitting a two RBI single that scored Leigraf and Sanchez.

Coach Ted Leigraf trotted out his third different pitcher of the week in Alexandria Cafolla. She faced a little adversity early on, but she forced weak contact with two runners on and picked up a strikeout to strand both of them on the basepaths.

Back at the plate in the top half of the second, the Spartans picked up where they left off as Ladson, Abagail Cafolla, and Johnson all found their way on base for the heart of the lineup. Missouri Baptist was only able to scratch one run across to make it 3-0.

Al. Cafolla was able to keep the Bethany batters from doing damage, and like Fischer, she let her defense do plenty of work. Her battery mate, and sister, got Missouri Baptist rolling again in the fourth inning with a double to center field. Leigraf moved her over and Sanchez brought her home with a sacrifice fly, Sanchez's second RBI of the contest.

In the sixth inning, the Spartans got a little two out rally going as Leigraf drew a walk, Sanchez singled, and Dees cleared the bases with a double to make it 6-0.

Al. Cafolla forced Bethany to go three up three down in the sixth and only allowed one runner in the seventh to complete the shutout.

In game two, the Spartans two, three, and four hitters, Sanchez, Dees, and Fischer, respectively, did their job, each driving in two runs.

Missouri Baptist's pitching and defense combined for only one run allowed in two games with no errors.

The pair of wins boosted Missouri Baptist to a 3-0 start for the first time since the 2014 season.

The Spartans will have a quick turnaround with another doubleheader, starting tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. taking on No. 8 Oklahoma City University and No. 2 University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
