Missouri Baptist's Pitching Sets the Tone in Wins Against Eutectics

ST. LOUIS - The UHSP Eutectics came to Missouri Baptist for a Friday afternoon doubleheader, and the Spartans dynamic duo of Brooklynn Fischer and Taylor Whitehead in the circle limited them to just three runs throughout the day. MBU went on to win both games by scores of 4-2 and 5-1.

Game One Recap

Fischer helped herself out in the first inning after recording three quick outs in the top half by hitting a two-out double before a seeing-eye single from Alexi Sanchez brought her around to score, putting the Spartans up 1-0.

After a few scoreless innings, the Eutectics plated a couple runs on four hits, gaining a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The Spartans responded with a pair of runs of their own. Allison Leigraf led off the inning with a walk before stealing second, and with two outs Miranda Ladson roped a double down the left field line that scored Leigraf. Emily Wright picked up a clutch two-out knock with a ground ball up the middle that Ladson scored on, regaining a one run lead over the Eutectics.

Fischer was tremendous in the final three innings as she held onto the one run lead while striking out six of the last nine batters. She finished the game allowing just two runs on five hits and struck out eight.

Ladson gave the Spartans a little bit of insurance in the sixth inning with a solo homerun. The Spartans scored in the most innings and responded on the scoreboard when they needed to, leading to a 4-2 win in the first of two games.

Game Two Recap

Taylor Whitehead mowed through the Eutectics lineup the first time through, retiring the side in order for the first three innings. Ladson continued her hot streak at the plate with another solo homerun in the second inning that gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

UHSP opened up the fourth inning with a leadoff triple, but what seemed to be a sacrifice fly was nullified by the runner leaving third base early, keeping MBU up by one.

The bottom half of the fourth inning was a big one for the Spartans. Fischer hit a one out single followed by a walk from Ladson. With one out and two runners on, Leigraf roped a triple into right field and came around to score on a little league homerun following a throwing error to third base. MBU was not done yet, Makayla Johnson drew a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Bella Skibinski.

The Eutectics finally got to Whitehead in the seventh inning when they scored one run on two hits. Whitehead went six scoreless innings before allowing one in the seventh and allowed just four hits while striking out four.

The Spartan offense has been cruising the ball throughout the season with a .350 team batting average, 129 extra-base hits, and 310 runs scored. MBU is outscoring their opponents 310-99, and Achs, Fischer, and Jacie Dees all have batting averages over .400. Fischer and Sanchez have both recorded hits in 10 straight games
