ST. LOUIS — Missouri Baptist University men's lacrosse edged William Woods University, 13-12, in overtime on Saturday night, capped by a sudden-death goal from Matthew Lash in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Quarterfinals.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-7 overall and advance to face No. 2 seed Saint Ambrose University on Wednesday evening in Iowa.
Lash led the Spartans offensively with five goals, including the game-winner and added one assist and three ground balls. Caleb Tant, Joe Busselman and Jake Cordes each tallied two goals, while Drew Chiodini and Raymond Lingard added one apiece.
Goalkeeper Ashton Scott recorded 13 saves, and Lingard went 15-for-25 on faceoffs.
Despite the win, the Spartans were outshot 44-37 and committed 20 turnovers compared to the Owls' 13.
MBU came out firing with four unanswered goals to open the contest, including two from Cordes. WWU responded, however, trimming the deficit to 7-6 by halftime.
The Owls opened the second half with back-to-back goals to take their first lead, 8-7. The teams then traded scores until the game was tied at 12 heading into overtime.
Just 30 seconds into the extra period, Lash curled around the back of the net from right to left and buried the game-winner, sending the Spartans to the semifinals.
