ST.LOUIS, Mo.- The Missouri Baptist University women's wrestling team fell to the No.3 William Penn Statesmen in their first home dual, 33-13. Three Spartans picked up victories for MBU.
The Statesmen started the night off with a technical fall win at 103. At 110, De'yton Young found a four-point move early in the match, but her opponent was able to use Young's momentum against her and found the fall, to take a 9-0 lead in the team score.
The Statesmen did not have a wrestler at 117, as junior Andrea Karagiannis took the forfeit to put MBU on the board. The Spartans also battled holes in their line-up at 124 and 131.
The No. 10 wrestler in the country, Zoe Fries, took the mat for the Spartans at 138. The freshman from Kuna, Idaho, kept up the pressure in her match and found the 12-0 technical fall that ended with a big throw to score four points.
At 145, Maggie Ortmann wrestled in the navy and white for MBU. Her opponent took the first takedown of the match, but Ortmann scored six unanswered points to win 6-2.
The Statesmen found wins at the final three weights, but a highlight from the 160-pound match was Cara Cheng, as she found a big throw while in a 6-0 deficit, but her opponent was able to hold on in the final eight seconds of the bout.
The Spartans look to bounce back next Tuesday, Jan. 27, as they travel to Marshall, Mo., to battle the tenth-ranked Missouri Valley College Vikings. Wrestling to start at 7:30 p.m.
