Fries Leads Spartans with Fourth-Place Finish at Midland Warrior Open

FREMONT, Neb.- The Missouri Baptist University women's wrestling team competed at the Midland Warrior Open hosted by Midland University on Saturday. Zoe Fries led the Spartans with a fourth-place finish in the 138-pound bracket.

The Kuna, Idaho native started quickly with a first-period fall at the 1:09 mark in her opening round match. Then, in his round of 16 match, Fries found six points in the first period, but did not score in the second, and Fries held on to win 6-2. In her quarterfinals bout, Fries got to her offense quickly after she got hit for passivity and found a takedown and a step-out point to lead 3-0 at the break. Fries held her opponent to two points in the second to reach the semifinals. The Semifinals pitted Fries against returning national champion and current No.1 at 145 Ester Kolawole from William Penn (Iowa). Despite the freshman's best efforts, Kolawole won the match in the first and sent Fries to the backside.

Fries trailed after the first period of her consolation semifinal match, but got to her offense and shut out her opponent 3-0 in the second period to win the match 3-1. Fries fell in her third-place match to finish fourth and go 4-2 on the day with a pin.

De'yton Young also placed at the tournament as she finished fifth at 110. The freshman dropped her first match of the day, tore through two consolation matches with a technical fall and a fall to make it to the consolation semifinal. Despite an 8-0 lead in the first, Young's opponent, Raelynn O'Connor of Hastings (Neb.), found a four-point move to a fall that sent Young to the fifth-place bout. Young grabbed another first-period fall to close her tournament and finished fifth with two falls and a technical fall.

The Spartans look ahead to their away conference dual against No. 2 Grand View University (Iowa) next Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m.
